Microsoft has bought the rights to the goliath video game IP, Gears of War, from the game’s developer, Epic Games.

According to Xbox.com, Microsoft’s statement reads that the tech giant has placed “Black Tusk Studios in Vancouver, BC will take over development of the Gears of War franchise and that Rod Fergusson, former Director of Production at Epic Games on the Gears of War franchise, will join Microsoft and play a key studio leadership role at Black Tusk on the development of the franchise going forward.”
The IP debuted during the 2006 holiday season with Gears of War. The original Gears of War game sold over 6 million units since release on November 7th, 2006. Over the last 6 years, the franchise has produce 4 games, selling over 22 million units, according to the USA Today.
According to IGN.com, Black Tusk Studios was developing “the next Halo” during this acquisition. What does this mean for “the next Halo”? Is it going to get a new developer or be shelved? How confident is Microsoft in Black Tusk Studios to take the reins of one of gaming’s last-gen giants? Can they turn the IP around unlike Epic Games?
